Biological uncertainties may be a hurdle, especially with a skeptical public. "There are concerns about environmental consequences," says geochemist James Bishop of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, California. "The question is, can we learn enough to not mess up the job?"
If you live in the United States, there’s a chance that one in three fish you consume was caught illegally. After analyzing data on the country’s seafood imports, researchers estimate that 20% to 32% of wild-caught seafood coming into the states was obtained by pirating, in which unauthorized fishers partake in practices like evading proper management by authorities. The findings, to be published in the September issue of Marine Policy, reveal that tuna brought in from Thailand and pollack from China run the highest risks of being illegal, National Geographic reports.
